“Many people may write off inner-city children, but Catholic schools cherish them as children of God and encourage them to reach their full potential.”

Saving America’s Urban Catholic Schools,
by Stephanie Saroki de Garcia and Christopher Levenic

Catholic schools have offered generations of American immigrants a superb, faith-filled education at minimal cost. More than 97% of Catholic school graduates go to college.

Today, however, Catholic schools nationwide — and especially in the inner cities — face a series of escalating challenges that continue to threaten their future viability.

Many archdioceses across the nation have created special partnerships to provide additional assistance to inner-city Catholic schools. Following different models, these partnerships have made a positive impact in cities like Chicago, Milwaukee, Bridgeport, Philadelphia and New York City.

The Catholic Urban Schools Partnership (CUSP) was recently established by the Archdiocese of Newark Schools Office to provide additional academic and financial support to nine inner-city Catholic schools.
